Rotary S.T.A.R. for May - Mesa Linda

The Rotary Club of Adelanto recognizes two Adelanto Elementary School District students, one on the third Wednesday and one on the fourth Wednesday of each month, throughout the school year. The students must meet at least one of the following criteria in order to be nominated for the S.T.A.R. award, "Striving To Achieve Results":

  • Improvement in GPA
  • Improvement in Attitude
  • Improvement in Attendance

On Wednesday, May 23, 2018 Makayla Cosper Bullock, an 8th grade student at Mesa Linda Middle School, was presented with the Rotary Club’s S.T.A.R. award and a gift card at the Rotary Club of Adelanto luncheon. The student is also asked what they want to be when they grow up; Makayla answered that she is interested in being a defense lawyer in larger civil suits.

Mr. Crews, MLMS counselor, wrote the following introduction that was read at the Rotary Club’s meeting:
“Over the last year Makayla has turned defiance into respect as shown with her attendance at school and going to class.  In her 7th grade year she was truant 19 times to currently 7.  Her GPA was a 1.1 and now it is a 2.7. Makayla wanted nothing to do with Mesa Linda Middle School as a 7th grader, this year she has become an active member of our school while being a part of the Volleyball, Basketball, and Soccer teams. She has moved from being confrontational to being a leader as a true friend and sister to her teammates. Often, Makayla can be seen talking her friends down from a confrontational situation or sharing with our counselor a student who is in need of additional support. This was a tough year personally for Makayla, but she has demonstrated resilience, courage, and resourcefulness in improving as a wonderful human being.”
