On Saturday, May 5, 2018 the 2nd Annual Parent Summit and Reclassification Celebration at the AESD Family Engagement Center / PD Center took place. This was an exciting one-day event designed to provide parents with the tools on how to use community resources efficiently. Parents were able to choose two 45-minute workshops which allowed them to increase parent/family and community engagement, increase awareness and proficiency around culture, and promote and foster student achievement. Workshops included topics on how to prepare your child for college, financial literacy, healthy lifestyles, tobacco prevention and awareness, mindfulness for parents, and steps to U.S. citizenship. In addition to these wonderful parent workshops, approximately 170 of the over 300 reclassified English Learners from all AESD schools were honored in front of their families with a certificate and a medal. The students were given the opportunity to participate in arts and crafts workshops provided by AESD teachers.
The keynote speaker was Terry Boykins, CEO of Street Positive, a community outreach organization that focuses on the emotional, physical, social, and economic well-being of children and those who care for them. Mr. Boykins gave a speech on the importance of parental involvement in education and the importance of being present in your child’s life.
This event would not have been such a success without the support of our school board, superintendent, and especially our site administrators. With the positive response received from the community and through the participation of various agencies from the City of Adelanto and San Bernardino County, the Adelanto Elementary School District looks forward to the 3rd Annual AESD Parent Summit.
