- Improvement in GPA
- Improvement in Attitude
- Improvement in Attendance
On Wednesday, November 16, 2016 Sicily Amorino, a 4th grade student at West Creek Elementary School, was presented with the Rotary Club’s S.T.A.R. award and a gift card at their luncheon.
Mrs. Bell, Sicily’s teacher wrote the following introduction that was read at the Rotary Club’s meeting:
"I recommended Sicily because of her personal growth in reading. At the beginning of the school year, she was not motivated to read. When it was time for her to practice reading aloud with groups of students and with me, I noticed tears flowing from her eyes. After weeks of modeling key reading concepts and lots of encouragement, she started to show growth in her reading skills. I also observe significant improvement in Sicily's confidence and willingness to read with other students and silently. She is showing gains in classroom and school district's assessments. Sicily is selecting a variety of books at her reading level. Another thing I noticed is, during instructional time for reading, she is developing a passion for understanding more about different topics. I am excited about her curiosity to want to know more about genres, blending sounds, and the definition of words. She shows good character traits and her attendance is exceptional. She is a model student, by always being safe, respectful, and responsible. This is why I nominated Sicily to receive this award."
