What is the Student Summer School Institute?

The Student Summer School Institute is a special program designed to pre-teach the CA content standards to students.

The Student Summer School Institute is a very special program because it will:

·         Pre-Teach the content standards to students, so they will be more successful during the regular school year.

·         Provide extensive vocabulary support to students. Vocabulary is a very important part of being successful at school. The more words students know, the more they will be able to understand what they hear and read, and the better they will be able to say what they want when speaking or writing.

·         Teach students how to extract information from text, so students will become better readers.

·         Provide many opportunities to read science and social studies passages. This type of reading is linked highly to school success.

·         Provide intensive training in developing reading fluency. With automatic word recognition, reading becomes faster and smoother, so students can begin to read silently, which is roughly twice as fast as oral reading.

Previewing the Vocabulary that will be used during the Reading Comprehension section

Before teaching content or reading a story in class, pre-teaching vocabulary is very important, especially for students. Teachers will use dynamic teaching methods such as: role playing, pantomime, gesturing, showing real objects, pointing to pictures, and doing quick drawings on the board. The teacher will go over the pronunciation of the words and explain the meanings in sentences to students. The students will use the words in multiple ways.

Reading Fluency using Informational Text (Science and Social Studies)

Teachers will use multiple methods for increasing reading fluency: 1) students will listen to text as they follow along with the book, 2) student will follow the print using their fingers as guides, and 3) materials will be used to challenge a student to reach a higher level of reading.

Reading Comprehension using Informational Text Structure

Teachers will use effective comprehension instruction employing strategies that good readers use such as predicting, thinking aloud, attending to text structure, constructing visual representations, generating questions, and summarizing. Instruction will include explicit explanation, modeling of strategy, and discussion of why and when its useful. Students will be fully engaged in every part of all lessons.

Vocabulary Development using Prefixes, Suffixes, Synonyms, Antonyms, and Context Clues

Students benefit greatly from direct teaching on how t o get meaning by reading all the little parts of difficult words. For example, when students know that the word part vari means “different”, they will have a head start on the meanings of the words: various, variety, variable, and variation.

Mathematics, using High Stakes Math

Teachers will use multiple methods for increasing math success: Instruction will include explicit explanation, modeling of strategy, and discussion of why and when it’s useful. Students will be fully engaged in every part of all lessons.
